Described below are tried and tested routes from the East (marked yellow on the map), North (pink), South (green) and West (blue).

I strongly suggest you do not use a SatNav system or routes from the AA, Google, Multimap etc for finding Knoll Cottage. They may be fine for the main part of the journey, but they all seem to make a complete mess of the approach to Knoll Cottage. They take you down narrow twisting lanes which no locals would use, and often give wrong advice for the final mile so that you are left not knowing where you are. Even if they actually find us they usually try to bring you down our lane (rather than up it) resulting in an awkward reverse into our entrance.

Directions from the East, eg. London (yellow route)

  1. A303 then A358 to Taunton
  2. From Taunton, continue on A358 towards Minehead.
  3. After about 4 miles turn left on to B3224 signposted Wheddon Cross. This turn is just after Cedar Falls health farm.
  4. After 5.4 miles turn right down a lane signposted Stogumber. This turn is the one after the second turn to Lower Vexford and Higher Vexford (if you miss it, about a quarter of a mile later you will come to a cross-roads with the B3188 - just turn round).
  5. Follow the road along, then down a hill (narrow road with passing places), into Stogumber village.
  6. Continue straight ahead, bearing to the left. The road is signposted to Bicknoller and Williton.
  7. Follow this road for one third mile. The road dips then climbs slightly under trees. Turn right up a steep narrow lane with a white house on the corner.
  8. Knoll Cottage is 100 yards up the lane on the left hand side

Directions from the North, eg. Bristol (pink route)

  1. Leave the M5 at junction 23. Follow the A38 towards Bridgwater. After two stretches of dual carriageway, the road becomes single carriageway, with a 40mph speed limit. Watch for a Volkswagen garage on the right.
  2. Immediately after the VW garage, turn right into Wylds Road
  3. Follow this road as it bends left through an industrial estate.
  4. At traffic lights turn right, signposted Minehead.
  5. The road goes through modern housing estates, and eventually comes to a roundabout with the A39.
  6. Turn right on to the A39
  7. After about 5 miles, watch out for the Cottage Inn pub on the right hand side. Shortly after it, take a left fork, signposted Over Stowey.
  8. Follow the road (narrow in places) through Over Stowey, then round to the left up the hill towards Crowcombe. The road goes over the top of the Quantock Hills.
  9. Eventually, over the other side of the Quantocks, the road drops down a T-junction. Turn right, then follow the road round to the left through Crowcombe village.
  10. At the cross-roads with the A358, go straight across.
  11. After 2.5 miles you come to a T-junction in the centre of Stogumber. Turn right towards Williton. The road goes up hill and bears to the left
  12. Follow this road for one third mile. The road dips then climbs slightly under trees. Turn right up a steep narrow lane with a white house on the corner.
  13. Knoll Cottage is 100 yards up the lane on the left hand side

Directions from the South (green route)

  1. Leave the M5 at junction 26. Follow the signs towards Wellington
  2. At traffic lights in the centre of Wellington, turn right on to the B3187, towards Milverton
  3. Go through Milverton to a roundabout. Turn left on to the B3227, towards Wiveliscombe
  4. Shortly after a roundabout on the outskirts of Wiveliscombe, turn right on to the B3188.
  5. As the road comes towards Elworthy, there is a cross roads with the B3224. Turn right towards Taunton.
  6. After a quarter mile turn sharp left towards Stogumber.
  7. Follow the road along, then down a hill (narrow road with passing places), into Stogumber village.
  8. Continue straight ahead, bearing to the left. The road is signposted to Bicknoller and Williton.
  9. Follow this road for one third mile. The road dips then climbs slightly under trees. Turn right up a steep narrow lane with a white house on the corner.
  10. Knoll Cottage is 100 yards up the lane on the left hand side

Directions from the West (blue route)

  1. Come along the A39 to Williton.
  2. At the min roundabout turn right on to the A358, towards Taunton
  3. Shortly after a Q8 garage on the left hand side, turn right towards Vellow and Stogumber
  4. The road wiggles past Curdon Mill on the left.
  5. It soon becomes straighter and after one mile it rises under trees. There is a stone wall on the right hand side.
  6. Turn left up a steep narrow lane, with a white house on the left.
  7. Knoll Cottage is 100 yards up the lane on the left hand side
